20. Accidentally Married to...A Vampire? by Mimi Jean Pamfiloff (2012)
The Accidentally Yours Series Book 2
Length: 260 pages
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Started: 12 February 2014
Finished: 28 March 2014
Where did it come from? Many thanks to Marissa at Grand Central Publishing for sending me a copy of this book to read.
How long has it been on my TBR pile? Since 28 October 2013
Why do I have it? I like paranormal romance and had read and enjoyed Accidentally in Love With...A God? by the same author in the past.

After three centuries spent trapped in a Mexican cenote - held prisoner by the fickle whim of a goddess - legendary vampire Niccolo DiConti vows to fulfill an ancient prophecy and, along the way, vanquish the demented vampire queen Reyna. The fact that 'Her Highness' had the power to literally make his existence a living hell if she so chose, was one that Niccolo was willing to overlook for the benefit of all innocent humans.

In order to fulfill the prophecy, all Niccolo must do is find his human mate, seduce her into agreeing to become a vampire, and bond her to him forever. Luckily, he's handsome, charming, and extremely skilled at satisfying women. This shouldn't be so hard.

While on vacation in sultry Mexico, biologist Helena Strauss makes the discovery of lifetime when she meets Niccolo - and immediately finds herself caught up in a world of supernatural secrets and dangerous delights. Even more shocking is that he seems to know everything about her and claims she is his immortal bride.

Alright, so maybe she can't keep her eyes off this gorgeous, perfect specimen of masculinity. And yes, she has been dreaming of kissing him from the very moment she laid eyes on him. But can a hot-blooded girl like her truly spend eternity with a cold-hearted vampire?

This is the second book in the Accidentally Yours Series, and the second book by Mimi Jean Pamfiloff that I've read. I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Again, I found the story extremely engaging - filled with many likable characters, even if several of them seemed certifiable at times. The plot was just as thrilling an action-packed as in the first book, and chock-full of humor that I completely appreciated. So far, I'm hooked on this series!

I give Accidentally Married to...A Vampire? by Mimi Jean Pamfiloff a definite A! and am looking forward to reading the next book in this series. I want to know what happens next.

In this collection of poignant and uplifting essays, you will read personal stories dealing with early school days; quirky first jobs; finding and keeping romance; the joys and difficulties of raising a family; going through various hard times; the pride and pitfalls associated with the writing journey; and discover what makes the characters these authors have created truly tick. Each story will alternately warm your heart, raise your spirits and ultimately compel you to examine your own life.

25 Years in the Rearview Mirror: 52 Authors Look Back by Stacy Juba will help readers discover a entire crop of new authors whose names they can add to their to-read lists. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this particular book. Alright, so it only took me two years to actually read, but I guess good things come to those who wait. :) I give 25 Years in the Rearview Mirror: 52 Authors Look Back by Stacy Juba a definite A+!

My mother had read Sink or Swim by the same author in March of 2011 and enjoyed it very much. I'm delighted to say that I have Twenty-Five Years Ago Today - the mystery that was the basis for the question asked in 25 Years in the Rearview Mirror - already on my TBR pile. I can assure you that reading Twenty-Five Years Ago Today won't take me another two years! :)

About Rest Her Soul:

It’s 1928, and the presidential election between Herbert Hoover and Al Smith is on everybody’s mind - everyone but Police Chief James Buckner of Corinth, Missouri. A young woman’s corpse has been discovered buried in the cellar wall of a boarding house in the nearby mining village of Taylor. Knowing he’s one of the best detectives they have, Corinth’s officials allow Chief Buckner to investigate.

Buckner learns the woman was strangled and then immersed in acid before being buried. Worse, she was pregnant. His investigation takes him to Arkansas and Tennessee, where he realizes he may be on the trail of a serial killer - one who specializes in murdering young prostitutes. But as Buckner closes in on the killer, he knows that coming up with enough evidence for a conviction may be difficult, if not downright impossible.

Tragically, no one seems to care about the dead women except Buckner. One thing is for sure: the murderer will kill again. But in this hardboiled world of nasty politics, questionable morals, and ruthless ambition, stopping his prey might exact a price that Buckner isn’t willing to pay.

From Missouri backwoods to seedy brothels, Rest Her Soul reveals the dark underbelly of America in the 1920s.

About Seeing Green:

Described as a “timely, energetic and witty” story of a young woman “on a mission to puncture the stasis of Reagan-Bush environmental policy” (Book Review, Huffington Post, 04/04/2012), Seeing Green pays homage to the DC scene, international---and office---politics, and idealism. The novel also explores the rocky and rewarding terrain of family and personal relationships from the perspective of a multicultural protagonist in “a felicitously fast-moving, tightly organized narrative” (Amazon book review).

Dan O'Brien - Conspirators of the Lost Sock Army and the Loose Change Collection Agency

Tuesday, March 18, 2014

18. Conspirators of the Lost Sock Army and the Loose Change Collection Agency by Dan O'Brien (2014)
Length: 41 pages
Genre: Short Story
Started/Finished: 18 March 2014
Where did it come from? Many thanks to Dan O'Brien for sending me a copy of this book to read.
How long has it been on my TBR pile? Since 11 March 2014
Why do I have it? I like short stories and Dan O'Brien is a new author for me.

Robert Pendleton is just your typically logical person - not given to improbable flights of fancy; nor is he the type to believe in mythical beings from magical realms. Which is why Robert is so surprised to meet Colin McMasters, Director of the 'Loose Change Collection Agency'. Colin is a leprechaun, and he has come to Robert to ask for his assistance. A gremlin known as 'The Scourge' has been terrorizing all leprechauns - determined to conquer them and steal their gold.

The question is, will Robert believe enough in Colin's plight to help him to defeat 'The Scourge', or will he think it is all a dream?

I must say that I found this book to be fast-paced, and also well-developed for the length of story. This is a story written and illustrated for children - so it's not too frightening or graphic, and children could read it themselves, if they chose. However, I'm certain many adults will appreciate that they too can read Conspirators of the Lost Sock Army and the Loose Change Collection Agency by Dan O'Brien, and find it just as enjoyable. I give this book an A! and look forward to reading more from this author in the future.

A. E. Kirk - Loving in Time

Monday, March 17, 2014

17. Loving in Time by A. E. Kirk (2013)
Length: 370 pages
Genre: Historical Fantasy
Started: 10 March 2014
Finished: 17 March 2014
Where did it come from? Many thanks to A. E. Kirk and to Dorothy at Pump up Your Book for sending me a copy of this book to read.
How long has it been on my TBR pile? Since 1 February 2014 as an ebook; Since 3 March 2014 as a physical book.
Why do I have it? I like historical fantasy and A. E. Kirk is a new author for me.

Life is pretty typical for half Greek-half American teenager Helen Xenaxis. She's just started her senior year at Mount Bumont High in New England, gets relatively good grades, and does her best to stay under the radar when it comes to getting in trouble with the principal. Not always easy tasks to accomplish when her best friend Paris Dolon is a prankster, determined to make senior year at Mount Bumont High memorable. Helen has the typical family - a mother and father, and two bratty younger twin brothers.

But Helen Xenakis' life is about to change drastically; and it all starts when her mother welcomes two cute but strange boys, Marcus and Gus, into the house and into Helen's life. During their stay, the boys help Helen to discover that she is anything but normal and she is in fact part of an ancient love story that has stretched to every corner of the world. She is, in reality, Helen the Princess of Sparta.

As Helen begins to remember things from a previous life, she sees things that she can't explain. When five other boys join Marcus and Gus, Helen is caused great physical pain when she utters the name, Troy. Together, the seven boys have traveled across time to ask Helen to do something for them - to go back in time and help break an ancient cycle. They will be there to try and protect her from the evil Decurion who wish to stop Helen from breaking the cycle by any means possible.

Journeying to Ancient Greece, Helen must act as she once did. However, when the moment comes and the war begins, she must break the cycle. Helen is given a life changing choice. The question is, will she choose wisely?

I must say, that I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I have always enjoyed reading stories based on ancient myths - so I was completely drawn in to the story from the beginning. The story was fast-paced and action-packed, and the characters were well-developed. I give Loving in Time by A. E. Kirk a definite A+! I have to say that this was quite a debut, and I look forward to reading more from this author in the future.

You’re never too old to have one more adventure

Brought to life by Steve Ferchaud’s vibrant drawings, this story for all ages by Dan O’Brien lets us know that it is never too late to have one more adventure.

Conspirators of the Lost Sock Army and the Loose Change Collection Agency Excerpt:

Robert Pendleton opened one eye as the light of a passing car flashed over the window, shattering the darkness into prisms. He rolled onto his back on the beat-up couch and yawned as he reached his hands up and rubbed his eyes unceremoniously.
He looked out over the darkness at the digital clock. The red digits spelled out a quarter ‘til midnight––nearly fourteen hours of sleep. He smiled and grabbed one of the cushions of the couch, burying his head in it. Just enough sleep, he reminded himself. Robert felt that anything less than twelve hours of sleep was very nearly too little.

He grasped blindly for the TV remote.

Groaning as he lifted his head, he looked at the empty table––his eyes drawn by another flash of a passing car. He couldn’t see clearly, but he knew that the remote had been there before he had fallen asleep nearly half a day ago.

“Could have sworn….” he mumbled as he pushed himself up and brushed his hand around the top of the table, finding nothing. “Where did….”

Another groan escaped his lips as he lifted his body to a sitting position and threw aside the cluster of pillows that he had gathered around himself. He reached out for the lamp, but instead knocked it to the floor with a resounding thud.

Robert muttered as he stood up from the couch, and then sank to his knees to search around in the darkness for the fallen lamp. Reaching around on the shadowed floor, shards of the broken lamp scattered like pieces of light.

He turned his head, peering beneath the large space underneath the couch and saw the reflection of the buttons on the remote. The off-gray piece of machinery was underneath the couch––only darkness lingered beyond it. He reached out as he spoke again.

“How did it get all the way down there?”

Robert flexed his hand and strained as he twisted his back to reach farther; yet, the remote remained just out of reach. He pulled his arm away with a huff and craned his neck to the side, staring underneath into the darkness below the couch.

His eyes widened as he saw the impossible: there was something beyond the remote. He shook his head and closed his eyes, whispering to himself that he didn’t see what he thought he had.

“I saw a little man,” he whispered to himself as he opened his eyes once more and nearly gasped as he did so.

The figure was closer now and he could make out the outline clearly. A tiny man rested just beyond the remote.

“What in the name of…?”

“Not here in the name of nobody, laddie. I be a friend though,” crooned the miniscule figure as he interrupted Robert and stepped forward, placing a hand on the darkened and slick surface of the remote.

A tam-o’-shanter crested his bright red hair, the shaggy mane blending perfectly into his equally crimson, neatly trimmed, beard.

A billow of whitish smoke drifted from the long-stemmed pipe that he held clenched between his lips.

Robert fell back and knocked aside the adjacent table. Rubbing his eyes, he spoke a single word: “Leprechaun.”

Kathryn Meyer Griffith - All Things Slip Away

Saturday, March 15, 2014

16. All Things Slip Away by Kathryn Meyer Griffifth (2005) (Revised Author's Edition 2014)
The Spookie Town Mysteries Series Book 2
Length: 231 pages
Genre: Contemporary Mystery
Started: 22 February 2014
Finished: 15 March 2014
Where did it come from? Many thanks to Kathryn Meyer Griffith for sending me a copy of this book to read.
How long has it been on my TBR pile? Since 13 April 2013
Why do I have it? I like contemporary mysteries and have read and enjoyed several books by this author in the past.

A decade ago, Chicago Homicide Detective Frank Lester and his partner Sam Cato tracked a vicious serial kidnapper and murderer who claimed six victims. The criminal, dubbed 'The Mud People Killer' by the press - for the crude mud sculptures he left in the victims' mailboxes after they were taken - specifically targeted Frank Lester by sending him taunting notes about each victim. Frank had shot him on a snowy night during a foot chase, and he believed, had killed him, although a body was never found.

However, the killer wasn't dead. He was only biding his time, waiting to exact his revenge on Frank and everyone he cares about now...ten years later. Frank retired early and is now living back in his hometown of Spookie - a quaint throwback of a close-knit community in the woods - when the killer resurfaces and takes up where he left off. Kidnapping more innocent people and tormenting Frank and everyone he cares about. There must be a way to stop him; and Frank and his artist girlfriend, Abigail Sutton, are determined to find it, before he kills more people, them included.

I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It was a very intriguing plot, filled with sympathetic characters that I really came to care about. And, I know this will probably sound strange to everyone, but I even felt some slight compassion for the murderer - not in any way for the horrible things he did - but for the mental anguish he experienced within himself. I give All Things Slip Away by Kathryn Meyer Griffith an A+!

I will say that this book was a little slow for me to get in to at first. Although, that had everything to do with my own reading pace and nothing else.

A+! - (96-100%)

I am an avid reader of novels with a deep passion for writing. I especially love romance and adore writing about people falling in love. I live a lot in the worlds I create and I actively speak to my characters (out loud). I have a warrior way “never give up on my dream.” When I am not writing, I spend a copious amount of time drooling over Rick Grimes from Walking Dead, watching Japanese anime and playing video games with my love - Dusean Nelson.

Barbra Annino - Gnome Wars: A Short Tale

    Thursday, March 13, 2014

    15. Gnome Wars: A Short Tale by Barbra Annino (2011)
The Adventures of the Fae Realm Series Book 1
    Length: 19 pages
    Genre: Short Story
    Started/Finished: 13 March 2014
Where did it come from? From Amazon
How long has it been on my TBR pile? Since 2 January 2014
Why do I have it? This ebook was a free download from Amazon, although I certainly want to read more short stories. I also like fantasy and Barbra Annino is a new author for me.

When Doug Baker moved into his new apartment, the last thing he expected was to inherit a gnome with a nasty temper and a serious case of territorial jealousy. But that's exactly what he got with Leroy. Apparently the little troublemaker saw absolutely nothing wrong with misplacing Doug's keys, hiding the remote control for the television and cracking the refrigerator door open just long enough to allow the milk to spoil.

Doug has tried just about everything he can think of to get rid of the annoying little pest, but Leroy refuses to leave. Between having to walk three miles back to his apartment in the freezing rain, because Leroy snagged his wallet and left Doug with no bus fare; to shelling out one hundred bucks to his irate landlord when a heavy, very expensive glass paperweight is mysteriously hurled through a window; to getting punched in the gut by his girlfriend when she discovers a strategically placed earring beside his bathroom sink - Doug is convinced that Leroy is a menace, although he can't for the life of him figure out why the blasted gnome is causing him such grief.

Determined to get rid of Leroy once and for all, Doug is just about at the end of his rope when he meets Trina. She may seem to be one sandwich shy of a full picnic, but the cute, bouncy shop owner claims to have the answer to all his problems. The Realm of the Fae is about to be unveiled, and for Doug Baker, there will be no turning back.

First of all, let me tell you that despite the humorous plot and fairy-tale like quality of the story, this book may not be to everyone's taste. I must admit that I was looking for something fast and fun to read, when I picked up Gnome Wars: A Short Tale on Thursday night. To be perfectly honest, I've been somewhat stalled with my reading for the past couple of days - not too badly - but just enough to know that I need a tiniest bit of a nudge into March.

I've never read anything by Barbra Annino before, although I may have some more of her books on my TBR pile, I'll have to see. Anyway, I certainly found what I was looking for with this book. It was funny, fast-paced, and left me wanting more Adventures of the Fae Realm. I give this book an A!

Ms. Hering is currently on a Book Blast tour with Pump up Your Book! lasting through mid-March. About A Woman Possessed:

In 1913, silk mill workers in Paterson, New Jersey, went on strike, demanding an eight-hour work day and better working conditions - reasonable requests that nevertheless led to the arrest of over 1,800 people. Young Eleanor O’Bannion was not arrested, but she was there. Living in the tenements of Paterson, she survived near starvation, poverty, and illness. She survived with the yearnings of love. Her heart belongs to the charismatic and passionate Dante Ravelli, a union leader, supporting the workers at the Great Silk Strike. But can Eleanor trust him to love her back?

Against her better judgment, she decides to marry Charles Lafferty, the wealthy son of a silk baron. Charles is stable, dependable, and safe. So why does she continue to think about the dashing Ravelli? Eleanor carries her own secret past, and this secret robs her of any happiness as she struggles to look to the future and find fulfilling love with her husband.

She has survived so much; she knows she will continue to thrive. Any choice she makes will hurt a man she loves. Who will she choose in the end: Ravelli or Charles - or perhaps, her own liberation?

    Mind Games Blog Tour Information:

    Meet Christine Amsden

Christine Amsden has been writing fantasy and science fiction for as long as she can remember. She loves to write and it is her dream that others will be inspired by this love and by her stories. Speculative fiction is fun, magical, and imaginative but great speculative fiction is about real people defining themselves through extraordinary situations. Christine writes primarily about people and relationships, and it is in this way that she strives to make science fiction and fantasy meaningful for everyone.

At the age of 16, Christine was diagnosed with Stargardt’s Disease, a condition that effects the retina and causes a loss of central vision. She is now legally blind, but has not let this slow her down or get in the way of her dreams. (You can learn more here.)

In addition to writing, Christine teaches workshops on writing at Savvy Authors. She also does some freelance editing work.

Christine currently lives in the Kansas City area with her husband, Austin, who has been her biggest fan and the key to her success. They have two beautiful children.
