Calling All Book Reviewers!

So, with the reissuing of The Last Vampire by Kathryn Meyer Griffith coming up in about two months - I would like to mention that I had the pleasure of reading Ms. Griffith's EPIC EBOOK AWARDS *FINALIST* horror novel back in December of 2010! Here is my review.

Meet Kathryn Meyer Griffith

Since childhood I’ve been an artist and worked as a graphic designer in the corporate world and for newspapers for twenty-three years before I quit to write full time. But I’d already begun writing novels at 21, over forty-two years ago now, and have had twenty (ten romantic horror, two horror novels, two romantic SF horror, one romantic suspense, one romantic time travel, one historical romance and three murder mysteries) previous novels, two novellas and twelve short stories published from Zebra Books, Leisure Books, Avalon Books, The Wild Rose Press, Damnation Books/Eternal Press; and I’ve self-published my last five novels with Amazon Kindle Direct and my dinosaur novels are my best-sellers.

I’ve been married to Russell for thirty-six years; have a son, James, and two grandchildren, Joshua and Caitlyn, and I live in a small quaint town in Illinois, which is right across the JB Bridge from St. Louis, Mo. We have three quirky cats, ghost cat Sasha and Cleo, and live cat Sasha (Too), and the five of us live happily in an old house in the heart of town. Though I’ve been an artist, and a folk singer in my youth with my brother Jim, writing has always been my greatest passion, my butterfly stage, and I’ll probably write stories until the day I die…or until my memory goes.

The Last Vampire - Revised Author's Edition Blurb:

The earthquakes, global floods, and devastating fires arrive first. The human race, displaced and panicked, flees, migrating to any place where there is food and shelter. Then, the worldwide plague arrives and with it, the stench of death. As mankind suffers and dies out, vampires - whose numbers are also dwindling from the same sickness – struggle, fighting fiercely among themselves to survive in a world where there aren't enough humans to feed upon. As the months pass, they become fewer, more desperate and more ruthless.

Emma, watching the world disintegrate around her, finds herself alone, her family dead, and fighting off an unnatural hunger as she becomes one of the undead. Defying her unwanted destiny, she is determined to resist the bloodlust and loss of humanity she feels, and deny the need to kill and feed on human blood, for as long as she can bear it. But she is so hungry and the night calls...

Here Are Some Books That I'm Hoping to Read!

Thursday, August 20, 2015

Back in January of 2015, I posted about eight books that I wanted to read to celebrate National Readathon Day on January 24th! Granted, I didn't get to finish reading that many books back on the actual day, yet that post did inspire me to post more about the books that I'm currently reading or planning to read very soon. Since I last posted about the books I was hoping to read back in April of 2015, I have read four of the eight books that I highlighted in that post.

I'm hoping to do this type of post approximately every four months or so, and plan to read between two to three books that I mention in the post, before the next post. Wish me luck! Here's my potential reading list for the next few months:

The Avalon Relics: Lilith Links by J. L. Clark (2014)
Length: 315 pages
Purchase your copy from Amazon!

The Avalon Relics: Lilith Links Blurb:

Sophia Bennett is looking forward to celebrating her eighteenth birthday
with her best friend Angie. After graduating high school and enjoying the last days of her summer vacation, getting ready for college and catching the eye of her high school crush Jake are the most important things on her mind...at least, until the night of her birthday party.

Suddenly, Sophia is thrust into a world that she never knew existed, and finds herself in the middle of an ancient struggle between good and evil. Time is against her as she and her new friends struggle to take possession of a powerful magic before it falls into the wrong hands.

Can Sophia solve the mystery of the Lilith links in time to save her loved ones, or will the enemy triumph and destroy all that she holds dear?

This book has been on my TBR pile since July of 2015 and as I'm a part of an upcoming blog tour featuring J. L. Clark, I'm hoping to start reading this book fairly soon.

Awakened by a Kiss by Lila DiPasqua (2010)
Length: 357 pages

Awakened by a Kiss Blurb:

Three classic fairytales - Sleeping BeautyPuss in Boots, and Little Red Riding Hood - cleverly retold with enough sensual twists to prove wickedly ever after does exist...

Sleeping Beau: Five years ago, the notorious rake, Adrien d'Aspe, Marquis de Beaulain, was awakened by a sensuous kiss - and experienced a night of raw ecstasy that was branded into his memory. Years later, he spots his mysterious seductress - and this time, he has no intention of letting her go...

Little Red Writing: Nicolas de Savignac, Comte de Lambelle, has been assigned by the King to uncover the secret identity of the author writing scandalous stories about powerful courtiers. He never expected his investigation would lead to his grandmother's house, or to a ravishing woman who would stir his deepest hunger...

Bewitching in Boots: Elisabeth de Roussel, daughter of the King, is accustomed to getting what she wants - and she wants Tristan de Tiersonnier, Comte de Saint-Marcel, an ex-commander of the King's private Guard. A recent injury has forced Tristan to leave his distinguished position, but Elisabeth is determined to make him see he's every bit the man he once was - and more than man enough for her...

So, this book has been on my TBR pile since December of 2014 and as I'm a lover of any type of fairytale retellings, this seemed like the kind of book that I'd like. I've just dipped into the first couple of chapters.

Autumn in Carthage by Christopher Zenos (2014)
Length: 332 pages
Purchase your copy from Amazon!

Autumn in Carthage Blurb:

The nether side of passion is madness...

Nathan Price is a college professor with crippling impairments, seeking escape from his prison of necessity. One day, in a package of seventeenth-century documents from Salem Village, he stumbles across a letter by his best
friend, Jamie, who had disappeared six months before. The document is dated 1692 - the height of the Witch Trials. The only potential lead: a single mention of Carthage, a tiny town in the Wisconsin northern highland.

The mystery catapults Nathan from Chicago to the Wisconsin wilderness. There, he meets Alanna, heir to an astonishing Mittel-European legacy of power and sacrifice. In her, and in the gentle townsfolk of Carthage, Nathan finds the refuge for which he has long yearned. But Simon, the town elder, is driven by demons of his own, and may well be entangled in Jamie's disappearance and that of several Carthaginians. As darkness stretches toward Alanna, Nathan may have no choice but to risk it all...

Moving from the grimness of Chicago's South Side to the Wisconsin hinterlands to seventeenth-century Salem, this is a story of love, of sacrifice, of terrible passions - and of two wounded souls quietly reaching for the deep peace of sanctuary.

This book has been on my TBR pile since March of 2014, and after starting to read it on May 16, 2014, I had to unfortunately set it aside for a while. I hope that I can start reading this book again some time soon.

Purchase your copy from Amazon!

The Search For the Stone of Excalibur Blurb:

Continuing the adventure that began in Egypt a few months prior in The Secret of the Sacred Scarab, cousins Adam and Justin Sinclair are hot on the trail of the second Stone of Power, one of seven ancient stones lost centuries ago. This stone might be embedded in the hilt of a newly discovered sword that archeologists believe belonged to King Arthur: Excalibur.

However, their long-standing enemy, Dr. Khalid, is following them as they travel to Scotland to investigate an old castle. Little do they know there is another deadly force, the Eaters of Poison, who have their own mission to complete. Time is running out as the confluence of the planets draws closer. Can Justin and Adam find the second Stone of Power and survive? And why did Aunt Isabel send a girl with them?

Join Justin and Adam as they search not only for the second Stone of Power, but also for the Scroll of the Ancients, a mysterious document that holds important clues to the Seven Stones of Power. As their adventure unfolds, they learn many things and face dangers that make even their perils in Egypt look tame. And how annoying for them that their tag-along companion, Kim, seems to have such good ideas when they are stumped.

This book has been on my TBR pile since July of 2015, since I'm part of the blog tour for Fiona Ingram in September of 2015. I hope that I can start reading this book again some time soon.

A tourist trolley filled with fifteen people is snatched up off the crater’s rim by another version of the younger one…but this one has grown into a giant with fangs, claws and a deadly tail. And this one has wings. Ugly Gargoyles, Henry calls them. For this one isn’t alone. They’re flying beyond the park’s boundaries into the neighboring towns.

So Henry, with the help of his son-in-law, a paleontologist named Justin, and a band of brave park rangers, and a few good soldiers, must not only protect his park and his people from monsters once more but find their lair and destroy it and them before the creatures kill again.

Dinosaur Lake III: Infestation Blurb:

Chief Park Ranger Henry Shore has dealt with and fought real live dinosaurs at his beloved Crater Lake National Park for over six years. With the help of his rangers, a few brave FBI friends and army soldiers he’d been victorious over a prehistoric lake creature and years later some particularly fiendish, and clever, specimens of the flying variety. He and his newspaper publisher wife, Ann, thought their park was finally rid of the monsters and they could reclaim their tranquil life in a place they cherished.

Not so. For suddenly across the park new and even more malevolent mutant species of dinosaur begin to appear and create havoc, attacking the park’s visitors and threatening its peace. And this time the primeval scourge isn’t confined to just their park. The creatures have moved into the nearby towns, across the western United States and up into Canada.

They are so much more aggressive, smarter and hungrier than any that have come before and the infestation is spreading further and faster than Henry and Ann can even imagine. This time there’s no easy way to defeat the dinosaurs. There’s too many of them and they’re too devious. This time it’s full out war and the victor will someday claim Earth.

Judy Carlson - The White Knight, the Lost Kingdom and the Sea Princess

Friday, August 14, 2015

30. The White Knight, the Lost Kingdom and the Sea Princess by Judy Carlson (2015)
Length: 449 pages
Genre: Fantasy
Started: 26 July 2015
Finished: 14 August 2015
Where did it come from? Many thanks to Kathleen at Pump up Your Book for sending me a copy of this book to read.
How long has it been on my TBR pile? Since 25 July 2015 as an ebook; Since 3 August 2015 as a physical book.
Why do I have it? I like fantasy and Judy Carlson is a new author for me.

It has been a decade for the people of the Kingdom of Ajar; a decade since their beloved ruler - the benevolent King Elmern, and the entire royal family - were brutally murdered - and the malevolent and despotic Lord Regent ascended to the throne. During his tyrannical reign, the Lord Regent and his infamous Black Guard have effectively held the citizens of Ajar captive by dark sorcery and killed anyone who would openly oppose their new King. There are a brave but determined few who have created an underground resistance to the Lord Regent's tyranny, but they are beginning to lose hope that they will ever be liberated from their captivity.

According to an ancient prophecy, freedom will come from the neighboring Northern Dominions - from the demesne of the benevolent monarch, Emperor Haroldson. Since childhood, Prince Lael and Prince Cristin - the twin sons of the Emperor - have both been raised with a strong sense of righteousness and a deep knowledge of their royal duty. In an effort to fulfill that duty, Prince Lael will undertake a perilous quest to prove himself worthy of his subjects' continued fealty; he must first prove his strength and loyalty when he is challenged by an insidious enemy. The tragic loss of loved ones will only fortify Prince Lael's resolve to fight for the freedom of the Lost Kingdom.

Cousins Clara Mae Bennet and Ian Halverson - two children from Minnesota - suddenly find themselves dropped into the mystical realm of the Northern Dominions, and immediately swept up into an incredible adventure. Together, the cousins will search for a way home again; joining in the quest to free a captive Sea Princess, battling evil, and conquering lurking temptations. Clara and Ian will eventually meet the legendary White Knight - Lord Aryel - and along the way the children will gain better insight and wisdom about themselves, experience enduring love, and form the most extraordinary friendships.

I have always enjoyed reading mythical and epic tales of fantasy, and this book was certainly no exception. In my opinion, it was an intricately-woven and well-developed story that moved along at a leisurely, yet intriguing pace. I would certainly recommend this book to anyone who doesn't mind reading a fantasy with strong Christian themes - I would give it an A!

A! - (90-95%)

About Dream Student:

College junior Sara Barnes thought her life was totally under control. All she had to worry about was her final exams, Christmas shopping, applying to medical school – and what to do about the cute freshman in the next dorm with a crush on her. Everything was going according to plan, until the night she started seeing other people’s dreams.

It’s bad enough that Sara is learning more than she ever needed to know about her friends and classmates, watching their most secret fantasies whether she wants to or not. Much worse are the other dreams, the ones she sees nearly every night, featuring a strange, terrifying man who commits unspeakable crimes. Now Sara wonders if she’s the only witness to a serial killer - and the only one who knows when and where he’s going to strike next.

Dream Student is the first book of the Dream Series.

About Dream Doctor:

Between adjusting to life as a newlywed and trying to survive the first month of medical school, Sara Alderson has a lot on her plate. She definitely doesn’t need to start visiting other people’s dreams again. Unfortunately for her, it’s happening anyway.

Every night, she sees a different person and a different dream. But every dreamer has one thing in common: they all hate Dr. Morris, the least popular professor in the medical school, and they’re all dreaming about seeing him - or making him - dead.

Once again, Sara finds herself in the role of unwilling witness to a murder before it happens. But this time, there are too many suspects to count, and it doesn’t help matters that she hates Dr. Morris every bit as much as any of his would-be murderers do.

Dream Doctor is the second book of the Dream Series.

About Dream Child:

Dr. Sara Alderson can deal with eighty-hour workweeks as a resident at Children’s Hospital. Dealing with crises in the Emergency Room or the OR is second nature to her. But now she faces a challenge that all of her training and experience hasn’t prepared her for: Lizzie, her four-year-old daughter, has inherited her ability to see other people’s dreams.

After Lizzie befriends a young boy on a trip to Washington, DC, and then wakes up in a panic that night because of a “bad funny dream,” Sara knows exactly what it means: her daughter is visiting the boy’s dreams. Complicating matters is the fact that the boy’s father is a Congressman, and he’s dreaming about a “scary man in a big black car” threatening his Daddy.

Unraveling a case of political corruption and blackmail would be hard enough for Sara under the best of circumstances. But when she has to view everything through the eyes of a toddler, it may be an impossible task.

Dream Child is the third book of the Dream Series.

Saturday, August 8, 2015

Hawaii is palm trees, black sand and blue water - but for policewoman Lei Texeira, there’s a dark side to paradise. Lei has overcome a scarred past to make a life for herself as a cop, but often the cases she works activate wounds and complications from her tangled family history. Lei is affected deeply by her cases even as she solves them with persistence, obsession, and intuition. She falls in love with Michael Stevens, the charismatic detective she works with, and they make a life solving crime in contemporary Hawaii with all its beauty and deadliness.

 Meet Toby Neal

Toby Neal was raised on Kauai in Hawaii. She wrote and illustrated her first story at age five. After initially majoring in journalism, she eventually settled on mental health as a career and loves her work, saying, “I’m endlessly fascinated with people’s stories.”

She lives in Hawaii with her family and dogs and enjoys many outdoor sports including bodyboarding, beach walking, gardening, hiking, wondering about human nature and coming up with original plots.

Toby credits her counseling background in adding depth to her characters - from the villains to Lei Texeira, the courageous and vulnerable heroine in the Lei Crime Series.
